The village of Emporio, built in the lowlands, was for many years the shopping centre of Santorini. Here were all the transactions of the Santorini products – hence the name of the village that mean commerce. Today is one of the largest villages of the island, with several stores, regional health centre, kiosk, school. The village of Emporios first appeared in history during the Venetian occupation of Santorini. Today what the visitor can see from that period is the ruins of the old Venetian Castle at the entrance of the village and some traces from another castle at the traditional town center.
