Fira Capital of Santorini

Fira is the capital of the island of Santorini, built in a unique way to steep cliffs: white cubic houses, glued to each other, creating countless levels, hooked the vertical cliffs. Unfortunately, the strong tourist traffic spurred the expansion of the settlement, removing a piece of its traditional character.

The old port of Santorini is below Fira. In the past the ascent to the capital was by donkeys or on foot from the stairs. Today there is asphalt that leads to Fira and the spectacular cable car, which makes the path within a few minutes. It is worth visiting the Orthodox and the Catholic Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, with plant fossils and archaeological finds, the Mpeloneio Cultural Center with important literature and history books, the Cultural Center of the Venetian Concert Hall Gizi where cultural events take place  and the Folklore Museum Emmanouel Lignou in Kontochori. In Fira, there are no beaches, most of them located on the west side of the island.

Worth to watch the Festival of Classical Music, which is in August and September. Spectacular event is the “Hfaisteia, which occur every year in mid August, with virtual eruption and musical events. Traditional festival with dancing and singing is the church of Prophet Elias, on July 20. Fira has many hotels, rooms and studios and a well organized camping.

During the sunset go early to one of the small cafes and bars along the Caldera in order to find a good place to admire the sunset.
Where to eat:
There are numerous eateries and restaurants in Fira most of them are around the main square and in the small streets along the caldera.

Shopping: A huge variety of souvenirs, jewelry and fashion shops scattering along the streets of Fira, for the budget visitor the big supermarkets located outside of the center on the road that goes to the new port.

Parking:: If you rent a car make sure to park it at the public parking of Fira, during the evening there are more free spaces along the main streets. A better area and more free public parking you will find in Firostefani a few hundred meters from Fira.
