Santorini can be reached either by air or by sea. Vessels arrive daily from Piraeus and many other Greek islands to the port of Santorini, Athinios, which nestles at the foot of the cliffs below the island’s capital town of Fira. In the past the only way to ascend the cliff to Fira from the port was by donkey or to climb the zigzagging steps to the top.
Fortunately, today there is a well made road where the visitor can either drive their own car, hire a taxi or take a bus from the port to ascend to Fira. If you arrive by cruise ships however these anchor at the old port of Thira, Skala Pier.
From here the ascent to the cliff-top town of Fira is one of three ways. You can either walk the 600 steps to the top, take the cable car which will get you to the top in around 5 minutes or take a donkey ride which follows the same route as the hikers. Both the cost for the donkeys or the cable car is the same, around 5 euros.
