Pyrgos the old capital of Santorini is a village at the inland of the island, Pyrgos is built on the highest point of the island on on the slope of the Prophet Elias mountain, the highest point of the island.
Until 1800 it was the capital of the island. In the centre of the village is the medieval castle that still retains the characteristics of the Venetian empire, with Byzantine churches, medieval houses and castles, churches and strewn with rubble, exuding a strong sense of power and prosperity.
The Castle kept in very good condition with the houses build around it amphitheatrically. It is worth visiting the monastery of Prophet Elias one of the oldest churches of Santorini, possibly from the 10th century.
Near by worth visit is the picturesque village of Kasteli that is situated on a hilltop and has wonderful views. In the village you will find restaurants, bars and taverns with live Greek music. Traditional events take place during the Easter like in many places in the Greek islands.On Good Friday, the entire region smells of rosemary, which adorns the cross. The same day, around the island the Epitaph display goes around the neighbourhoods and the village is surrounded by innumerable lamps and candle lights..
